Origin

Mid 17th century. From classical Latin prōclāmātor person who cries out or proclaims (in an isolated attestation in Cicero, though the reading has been disputed; subsequently in post-classical Latin: 636 in Isidore) from prōclāmāt-, past participial stem of prōclāmāre + -or. Compare French proclamateur.
