Late 16th century; earliest use found in John Bridges (?1536–1618), bishop of Oxford. From classical Latin prō pro + confessō, ablative of confessus, past participle of confītērī to confess. The phrase pro confesso was probably used earlier in post-classical Latin, but has not been traced.
