1A person who writes (especially skilfully) in metre; specifically a poet who is particularly adept in the handling of metre.
2More generally: a metrical writer.
Origin
Mid 16th century; earliest use found in John Bale (1495–1563), bishop of Ossory, evangelical polemicist, and historian. Either from post-classical Latin metrista from classical Latin metrum + -ista, or (especially in later instances) independently from metre + -ist.
