Late Middle English (in an earlier sense). From classical Latin prōfluent-, prōfluēns (of water) free-flowing, running, (of speech) fluent, use as adjective of present participle of prōfluere to flow forth, to flow freely, to overflow, to spring or emanate from from prō- + fluere to flow.
