Early 21st century: from Japanese takotsubo 'pot used to trap octopus', from tako 'octopus' and tsubo 'pot, jar', from the resemblance of the ballooning of the heart ventricle characteristic of the condition to the distinctive round-bottomed, narrow-necked form of the pot, and cardiomyopathy.
