释义	Taney, Roger Brooke /ˈtônē / (1777–1864), US chief justice 1836–64. He was active in Maryland politics and was the US attorney general 1831–33 before being appointed chief justice. He upheld the principle of federal supremacy over states' rights. In the Dred Scott v. Sandford case 1857, he expressed the opinion that blacks could not be citizens and that Congress had no control over slavery in the territories.
