Origin

Late 16th century; earliest use found in Abraham Fleming (c1552–1607), author, literary editor, and Church of England clergyman. From classical Latin prōscriptus proscribed person, use as noun of past participle of prōscrībere. Compare Middle French, French proscrit person condemned to death without judicial process, banished person.
