Origin

Late 16th century; earliest use found in Thomas Morley (?1557–?1602), composer. From classical Latin proslambanomenos added note at the bottom of a system of tetrachords (Vitruvius) from Hellenistic Greek προσλαμβανόμενος, use as noun of medio-passive participle of ancient Greek προσλαμβάνειν to take or receive besides or in addition from προς in addition + λαμβάνειν to take.
