In full proso millet. A kind of millet, Panicum miliaceum (family Poaceae (Gramineae)), thought to be of central Asian origin and grown as a cereal and forage crop in Asia and North America.

Early 20th century; earliest use found in Liberty Bailey (1858–1954), horticulturist and botanist. From Russian proso from the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit pṛśni dark-coloured, many-coloured.
