单词 | Provimi |
释义 | Provimi/prəʊˈviːmi/Chiefly North American noun A trademark for: a formula (typically milk-based) with vitamin and mineral supplements, fed to a calf in order to increase the quality and tenderness of its meat (as veal). Also: veal from a calf that has been fed this formula. Frequently attributive, especially in Provimi veal. Origin1960s; earliest use found in The Los Angeles Times. Apparently from Dutch Provimi (apparently so named in the 1930s, although the word is apparently not recorded in dictionaries of Dutch) from pro- (in proteïne) + vi- (in vitamine) + mi- (in mineraal), with reference to the nutrients contained in the formula. |
