Origin
Late 16th century; earliest use found in Edward Wright (d. 1615), mathematician and cartographer. From post-classical Latin Prutenicus from Pruteni, Prutheni Prussians, formed after Ruteni Russians based on the similarity in form of post-classical Latin Russia and Prussia, + -icus.
