2A preparation made from the dried berries of a Chinese schisandra, S. chinensis, credited with various stimulant and medicinal properties.
Origin
Early 19th century; earliest use found in Curtis's Botanical Magazine. From scientific Latin Schisandra, genus name from ancient Greek σχίζειν to split + ἀνδρ, ἀνήρ male, so called on account of the divided stamens.
