Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Jabez Hogg (1817–1899), ophthalmic surgeon. From post-classical Latin pseudonavicella (attributed to C. T. von Siebold, although use in his works has not been traced) from pseudo- + navicella small boat: see quot. 1867.
