A former genus of placoderm fishes of the Devonian period (now called Pterychthyodes) having wing-like pectoral appendages encased in bony plates; a fish of this genus.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Reports of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. From scientific Latin Pterichthys from ancient Greek πτερο- + ἰχθύς fish.
