Origin

Late 16th century; earliest use found in Richard Bristow (1538–1581), Roman Catholic priest. From post-classical Latin patripassianus person who believes that God the Father suffered on the Cross (3rd cent.), of or relating to this belief from classical Latin patri- + pass-, past participial stem of patī to suffer + -iānus.
