Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Janesville (Wisconsin) Daily Gazette. Perhaps alteration of mourning dove, after moaning, arising from U.S. regional (southern) pronunciation of mourning, or perhaps independently from moaning + dove, with reference to the bird's call.
