A tong-like tool used for shaping a glass vessel or object which is being rotated on the end of a pontil rod. OriginEarly 18th century; earliest use found in William Salmon (1644–1713), medical empiric and author. Apparently from Italian procello, of unknown etymology. Perhaps compare earlier procer. The some forms apparently arose by analogy with names of similar instruments, e.g. pincers, tweezers, etc. |
