Of or relating to a group of relatively primitive anuran amphibians (frogs and toads) having ribs in the adult and a rounded non-protrusible tongue; especially of the family Discoglossidae.
  • The family Discoglossidae (sometimes called Alytidae) is now generally restricted to the painted frogs (genus Discoglossus) and midwife toads (genus Alytes) of Europe and North Africa. It formerly included other genera with primitive features now placed in other families (e.g. Ascaphus, Leiopelma, and Bombina)..

Late 19th century; earliest use found in Edward Cope (1840–1897). From scientific Latin Discoglossidae, family name; from Discoglossus, genus name; from ancient Greek δισκο- + γλῶσσα tongue: see gloss) + classical Latin -idae): see -id.
