Adopted as a slogan in the 1948 election by the successful Afrikaner National Party, apartheid extended and institutionalized existing racial segregation. Origin

1940s: from Afrikaans, literally 'separateness', from Dutch apart 'separate' + -heid (equivalent of -hood).
