Origin
1940s; earliest use found in Denton (Maryland) Journal. From American Spanish (El Salvador) pupusa tortilla made with maize or rice flour and filled with pork cracklings, cheese, or other ingredients from Pipil pupu:sah (ultimately from Nahuatl popōtzoā to puff out, thicken, swell), the tortilla being so called on account of its shape.
