1 Medicine. Any relatively severe form of purpura, especially when accompanied by haemorrhage into other organs; (in later use) specifically idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Now rare.
2 Veterinary Med. A potentially fatal disorder of horses characterized by purpura of the mucous membranes, oedema of the limbs, fever, and tachycardia, which results from an immune-mediated vasculitis, often as a complication of Streptococcus equi infection (strangles).
