Also called hound's-tongue. OriginLate Middle English; earliest use found in Guy de Chauliac's Grande Chirurgie. In some forms from dog + tongue; in some forms from the genitive of dog + tongue. In sense 1 after classical Latin cynoglossos (Pliny), itself from Hellenistic Greek κυνόγλωσσος, κυνόγλωσσον (Dioscorides); so called on account of the shape of its leaves. |
