Origin

Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Confirmation by Indians of Sale of Hempstead in 1643. From an Algonquian place name first attested in English context as Meuntacut, Mountacutt and in Dutch as Mirrachtauhacky, apparently adaptations in Pidgin Delaware of the Munsee form of the name.
