In later use also: the ultra-conservative, nationalist ideology associated with the Vichy regime and its supporters. Origin1940s; earliest use found in The Oakland Tribune. From the name of Henri Philippe Pétain + -ism, probably after French pétainisme (although this is first attested slightly later: 1943). |
