Early 19th century; earliest use found in William Herschel (1738–1822), musician and astronomer. From post-classical Latin Quadrans Muralis Mural Quadrant (J. Bode Uranographia (figure); 1602 or earlier as the name of the instrument) from classical Latin quadrans + muralis.
