A square block, especially of brick; specifically a kind of chalky brick used in Italy.
Origin
Late 17th century; earliest use found in Robert Plot (bap. 1640, d. 1696), naturalist and antiquary. Probably partly from post-classical Latin quadrellus, and partly from Italian quadrello square stone or brick.
