Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Henry Walter Bates (1825–1892), naturalist. From Portuguese motuca, mutuca from Tupi mutuka from mu-, prefix used in the names of various flies (shortened from mberu fly) + -tuka, of unknown meaning and origin.
