Late 17th century. From East Cree *kwi:hkwaha:če:w (now kuikuhaacheu; compare Cree kwîhkwahâkêw, Ojibwa gwiingwa'aage), apparently with folk-etymological alteration after quick and perhaps either hatch or hatch.
