A kind of goose (or duck), variously identified with the greylag, Anser anser, the brent goose, Branta bernicla, and the goldeneye, Bucephala clangula. Also †quink-goose.
Origin
Mid 16th century; earliest use found in The Register of the Privy Council of Scotland. Origin uncertain; probably imitative of the birds' calls, although compare note below.
