A large gold coin weighing about 171 grains, which was introduced in Iran under Nādir Shāh (1736–47) and remained in production until the later 18th cent.
Origin
Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Jonas Hanway (bap. 1712, d. 1786), merchant and philanthropist. From Persian muhr ašrafī from muhr + ašrafī.
