A state of equilibrium (as in a star or the atmosphere) in which the total flux of emitted energy is equal to the flux of that absorbed; a state of equilibrium in which radiation is the predominant energy transport mechanism.
Origin
Early 20th century; earliest use found in Arthur Eddington (1882–1944), theoretical physicist and astrophysicist.
