Origin
Early 18th century; earliest use found in Aaron Hill (1685–1750), writer and entrepreneur. From Arabic murji'a, collective plural of murji', lit. ‘one who postpones’, active participle of arja'a postpone, defer (in reference to the belief that judgement on the ultimate destiny of grave sinners should be postponed until decided by God on the Day of Judgement).
