Late 19th century; earliest use found in American Journal of Science. From French empholite from Hellenistic Greek ἐμϕωλεύειν to lurk in + French -ite; so called on account of the difficulty of spotting the mineral because of its small size and its colour, similar to that of the surrounding rock.
