In South Asia: a seat made of cushions, especially one used as a throne by an Indian prince; a throne. Also: a carpet forming a similar seat of honour formerly used in Persia.
Origin
Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Robert Orme (1728–1801), historian of India and East India Company servant. From Persian and Urdu masnad a large cushion, couch, throne from Arabic masnad cushion from sanada to lean against.
