(Originally) an informal garden created so as to produce the effect of natural scenery, especially one with undulating parkland, serpentine lakes, and open vistas, such as those designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown (1716–83); (later also) an informal cottage garden, typically stocked with colourful flowering plants.

Late 18th century; earliest use found in Horace Walpole (1717–1797), author, politician, and patron of the arts.
