The school rejected determinism and advocated hedonism (pleasure as the highest good), but of a restrained kind: mental pleasure was regarded more highly than physical, and the ultimate pleasure was held to be freedom from anxiety and mental pain, especially that arising from needless fear of death and of the gods.After Epicurus' death, Epicureanism continued to flourish as a philosophical movement.... The philosophy that's most often associated with the pursuit of pleasure is Epicureanism, named after the Ancient Greek Philosopher Epicurus. In the tenth and final book, devoted to Epicureanism, Diogenes preserves three of Epicurus' letters to his disciples, in which he presents his basic views in a concise and handy form.
