Probably partly from Anglo-Norman ramail, ramaile, ramayle, ramale, Anglo-Norman and Old French ramayl, Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French ramaille (French regional ramaille) branches, loppings from rame branch + -aille, and partly from Old French, Middle French ramelle branches from rame branch + -elle.
