1980s; earliest use found in Nature: a weekly journal of science. From Nariokotome (Turkana Naryokotome, lit. ‘(place) by the black elephants’), the name of a place near Lake Turkana, in the Turkana District of the Rift Valley province of western Kenya, where the skeleton was found.
