1970s; earliest use found in The New Yorker. From Hindi nasbandī ligature, vasectomy, sterilization from nas vein, sinew (from Sanskrit snasā tendon, muscle) + bandī binding, tying (from Persian bandī, ultimately from Sanskrit bandh- to bind, tie, fasten).
