Probably from the unattested Norn reflex of the early Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic hnípa to be downcast, droop, Faroese nípa to bow the head, droop from the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian kniaubtis to hide one's face, kniubti to kneel with one's face downwards, incline, bend.
