A syndrome characterized by the presence of an enlarging pituitary tumour, associated with elevated ACTH levels and hyperpigmentation, in a patient who has previously undergone bilateral adrenalectomy for Cushing's syndrome.
Origin
1970s; earliest use found in Progress in Atomic Medicine. From the name of Don H. Nelson, U.S. physician, who described the syndrome in 1960 (Ann. Internal Med. 52 560).
