Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Robert Mayne (1808–1868). From scientific Latin Nemocera (P. A. Latreille in Nouveau Dictionnaire d'Histoire Naturelle X. 288; irregularly from ancient Greek νῆμα thread + κέρας horn: see kerato-) + -ous.
