A modern revival or appreciation of primitive or unsophisticated values, beliefs, styles, etc., especially as a rejection of contemporary influences; (Art, Music, etc.), any of a number of artistic styles characterized by the use of deliberately naive, simple, or ‘primitive’ techniques.

Used especially (usually with capital initial) to denote a Russian movement of the early 20th cent. (1907–12) which consciously sought to make use of traditional Russian folk and iconic styles and techniques..
