Origin
Late Middle English (in an earlier sense). From Middle French recusation action of recusing and its etymon classical Latin recūsātiōn-, recūsātiō expression of unwillingness or disagreement, objection, (in legal use) counterplea, demurrer from recūsāt-, past participial stem of recūsāre + -iō. Compare Old Occitan recusació, Spanish recusación, Portuguese recusaçao, Italian ricusazione.
