A member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic order of priests and lay brothers founded in 1732 by St Alphonsus Liguori, devoted chiefly to preaching, especially through parish missions and retreats.

Early 19th century; earliest use found in Trewman's Exeter Flying Post. From redemptor + -ist, perhaps after French rédemptoriste, German Redemptorist, or Italian redentorista, nouns (although all of these are apparently first attested later: 1829 in French, 1834 or earlier in German, 1857 or earlier in Italian).
