1950s. From the names of Dennis Newman, 20th-cent. British statistician, who proposed the test in 1939 (Biometrika 31 20) and M. Keuls (of the Institute of Horticultural Plant Breeding, Wageningen, Holland), who proposed the same test in 1952 (Euphytica 1 112).
