Originally: a viscous substance obtained from the seeds of black cumin, Nigella sativa. In later use: an alkaloid extracted from this substance which also occurs in other nigellas; 3-methoxy-2-(methylamino) benzoic acid methyl ester, C10H13NO3.

Origin

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Henry Watts (1815–1884), chemist. From German Nigellin from scientific Latin Nigella + German -in.
