A translucent brown or brownish-green mineral which consists of a hydrated phosphate of calcium and uranium (usually with some cerium or other rare-earth elements), and belongs to the orthorhombic system.
Origin
1950s. From the name of the NingyoPass in Tottori Prefecture, Japan (Japanese Ningyō Tōge, lit. ‘Doll Pass’), famous for its uranium mines + -ite, probably after Japanese ningyō-seki.
