A country on the Baltic Sea, between Sweden and Russia; population 5,250,300 (est. 2009); official languages, Finnish and Swedish; capital, Helsinki. Finnish name Suomi.
The northern third of the country lies within the Arctic Circle. Long an area of Swedish-Russian rivalry, Finland was ceded to Russia in 1809, becoming an independent republic after the Russian Revolution. Wars with the Soviet Union were fought in 1939–40 and 1941-4. Finland joined the European Union in 1995
