Reichstag firenounA fire which destroyed the Reichstag building on 27th February, 1933, leading to the suppression of the Communist Party, and aiding the seizure of power by the Nazis.- A Dutch communist, Marinus van der Lubbe, was arrested and tried for starting the fire, along with a German communist and three Bulgarian Comintern agents: only van der Lubbe was convicted, and he was executed in 1934. Van der Lubbe claimed that he had acted alone, but the Nazis accused the Communists of plotting against the government, and the Communists accused the Nazis of complicity in the fire and of plotting to undermine the Communist Party and seize power.
